Restoration of Eden (ROE)IntroductionMany of the hill tribes in the mountains of Northern Myanmar continue to practice the age old farming way of "Slash and burn", clearing ancient forest and woodland to create farms where the thin soil becomes exhausted after three or four years. This land is then abandoned and heavy rain washes the unprotected soil away. The Restoration of Eden project was established by the Lisu Theological Seminary of Myanmar (LITSOM) to demonstrate an alternative way of farming that will help the Lisu and other tribal people to learn new ways that will give them a better quality of life. The project's demonstration farm has over 100 acres of land with all kinds of surfaces, gentle and steep slopes and level ground. There are hills and valleys where streams, brooks, and pools are available. It will be used to demonstrate Agricultural and Aquatic Technology which is a course to be run by the seminary. This farm site is appropriate for the demonstration of Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT 1), Simple Agro-Livestock Technology (SALT 2). Sustainable Agro-forest Land Technology (SALT 3. and Small Agro-fruit Livelihood Technology (SALT 4). These Technologies have been used for many years in the Philippines. It will also demonstrate other technologies of sustainable development especially those concerning hydro power, solar power and wind mill power. This project therefore is to equip the hill tribe communities with the technologies of sustainable development which are appropriate to raise their living standard and to preserve and perpetuate the environment. |
